The U-Boat Italo Fontana U-42 Titanium has a bold industrial design that immediately stands out on the wrist. The large dial uses oversized numerals and strong lume for clear readability, while the titanium case keeps the watch lighter than its massive size suggests. The sapphire crystal protects the dial and adds durability for daily wear. U-Boat pairs the watch with a thick leather strap that matches the rugged military-inspired style. The left-side crown guard system also gives the watch its signature aggressive appearance.

Inside the watch is a Swiss automatic movement that powers the U-42 with smooth and dependable operation. Different U-42 models use variations of automatic calibers, including the U-28 movement with around 40 hours of power reserve. The movement supports the oversized case design while keeping the watch practical for everyday use. U-Boat also includes an exhibition case back on many versions so owners can view the movement while it runs.

The U-42 collection takes inspiration from military watch concepts created in 1942 by Ilvo Fontana, grandfather of U-Boat founder Italo Fontana, for the Italian Navy. The original project never entered production, but Italo rediscovered the drawings decades later and used them as the foundation for the U-Boat brand. The U-42 became one of the company’s most recognizable models because of its oversized titanium case, left-side crown system, and strong military styling.

The watch shows light surface scratches and small marks across the case and bezel from regular wear. The case back also shows visible wear and patina. The dial appears clean, and the crystal looks clear overall. The leather strap remains in good condition.

What do the different grading scores mean?

• BN 9.9: Brand new and unworn, with no signs of use.
• UN 9.5: Like new and unworn, but may lack original packaging or materials such as the box, links, tags, or bezel protector.
• LN 9.0: Like new and unworn, but only includes the watch without papers, box, or accessories.
• MT 8.5: Mint condition, lightly used with minor surface scratches or wear. Unpolished.
• VG 8.0: Moderately used, with scratches and one or two nicks on the case or crystal. Shows signs of polishing. The bracelet remains snug with minimal wear.
• GD 7.5: Shows signs of daily wear but is not abused, with noticeable polishing on the case. The bracelet shows clear signs of daily wear.
