The Seiko Giugiaro SBEE002 stands out because it blends a bold, vintage-inspired design with practicality — its asymmetrical, offset case and gold-toned dial give it a distinctive, collectible look while the curved crystal, sturdy build and 200 m water resistance make it a real diver-style watch.
The SBEE002 features a gold-toned dial paired with a matching gold PVD (or gold-tone) stainless-steel case. The case is fairly large at 43.8 mm wide (with a lug-to-lug measurement of about 48 mm) and about 11.2 mm thick, giving it a substantial presence on the wrist. The watch uses a curved crystal over the dial (some sources say curved glass). The dial is equipped with luminous hands and hour markers (LumiBrite or similar), which improve legibility in low light — a practical detail that corresponds well with its diver-watch heritage. The strap is a black silicone (or rubber/silicone) band rather than a metal bracelet, giving the watch a sportier, utilitarian feel and likely adding comfort and flexibility compared to a rigid bracelet. Overall, the design remains bold and distinctive — much more striking than the typical dive watch, with the gold plus black-strap combo giving it a retro-stylish edge.
Under the hood, the SBEE002 runs on Seiko’s quartz calibre 7N36.This movement offers time, central seconds, plus day-of-week and date complications — a practical combination for daily use. The official accuracy rating is ± 15 seconds per month, which is typical for a quartz movement of this kind and ensures reliable timekeeping without the need for frequent resetting. Battery life is decent: roughly four years under normal use.It is not a mechanical movement, so it lacks the charm of a sweeping seconds hand or display back, but it gives the watch practicality, low maintenance and consistent performance.
The SBEE002 is part of a re-issue by Seiko of a classic diver originally conceived in collaboration with Giugiaro Design. The original design dates back to the 1980s, a period when Seiko and Giugiaro experimented with asymmetrical case shapes and bold styling — in part inspired by avant-garde fashion and even film aesthetics. The re-issue of SBEE002 (alongside companion model SBEE001) was released in mid-2017, as a limited edition number, reportedly restricted to about 2,000 pieces. Japan Online Store The aim was to faithfully reproduce the vintage design — preserving the distinctive case shape, dial layout, and overall diver-watch vibe — while using modern materials and Seiko’s reliable quartz technology. Monochrome Watches As such, SBEE002 stands as a bridge between the bold experimental spirit of Seiko in the 1980s and modern sensibilities: a collectible limited-edition piece that recalls a niche era of watch design while remaining usable and robust today.
