The Rolex Oysterdate Precision Ref. 6494 stands out for its compact 34 mm Oyster case, classic date display, and hand-wound movement. It represents an early stage of Rolex’s Oysterdate line and combines practical features with the simple design of a vintage Rolex.

The Rolex Oysterdate Precision Ref. 6494 has a classic 34 mm Oyster case with a simple, balanced design. Its dial comes in several colors and often features elegant hour markers, a date window at 3 o’clock, and Rolex’s distinctive roulette date wheel with alternating red and black numbers. The watch uses an acrylic crystal, which suits its vintage character. Many examples came on a steel Oyster bracelet, while others used leather straps.

The 6494 uses a hand-wound Rolex movement from the 1210 family, commonly identified as Calibre 1215 in the date version. It has 17 jewels and beats at 18,000 vibrations per hour. The movement provides hours, minutes, seconds, and date functions. It does not have a quick-set date, so the wearer must advance the hands to change the date.

Rolex introduced the Oysterdate line in the early 1950s, starting with the Ref. 6094. The Ref. 6494 followed as one of the early Oysterdate Precision references and appeared mainly during the mid-to-late 1950s. Rolex later replaced this generation with the Ref. 6694, which introduced the higher-beat Calibre 1225. The 6494 therefore represents an important early chapter in the Oysterdate's development.
