The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean is a lovable oddball – it never comes to mind when a collector is asked what he or she believes to be the most iconic or recognisable watch, but, in most cases, the same collector would accurately identify the orange-accented Planet Ocean faster than his or her original answer.
With so many dive watches so heavily inspired by the Rolex Submariner, the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean with orange accents has possibly become the most recognisable dive watch, surpassing even the standard Seamaster, which is comparatively tame in both design and function. Its large size – necessary for a water resistance rating of 600 m – makes it easy not only for watch enthusiasts to spot but also for the wearer to read in waters with lower visibility. Today, all of Omega’s dive watches feature ceramic bezels, which are scratch resistant but not crack resistant, to the dismay of those who prefer a scratched bezel to a cracked one, especially because the latter is more likely to fall off completely. There are also enthusiasts who favour the “ability” of coloured aluminium to fade under certain conditions over decades, thus giving each piece a character that uniquely reflects its wearer.
